Rum in the Land of the Vikings
Denmark is a nation of rum lovers with a renowned seafaring history and ties to the Caribbean. Today, we see a rich landscape of Danish-made rum and independent rum bottlers. The name Denmark translates to “field,” aptly describing its predominantly flat terrain with arable land suitable for grain farming, though not sugarcane. As the southernmost Scandinavian country in Europe, Denmark occupies the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It shares a border with Germany and is linked to Sweden via the Öresund Bridge. The Jutland Peninsula (Jylland in Danish) forms the mainland of Denmark and extends into the North Sea, separating it from the Baltic Sea; it also includes part of northern Germany. North Jutlandic Island sits at its northernmost point. Denmark is an archipelago of over 400 islands, with sprawling coastlines, rolling hills, and windswept beaches. The Jutland Peninsula connects the country to mainland Europe, while significant islands like Zealand, Funen, and Bornholm are located in the Baltic Sea. Natural landmarks such as the rugged cliffs of Møns Klint, the shifting sands of Råbjerg Mile, and the serene lakes of Silkeborg highlight the country’s beautiful landscape. Denmark’s temperate maritime climate is generally similar to Scotland’s for cask maturation.
Long after the Viking era, Denmark’s seagoing tradition continued, eventually shaping its rum heritage through its colonial past and the influence of the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands). Between 1460-1864, Flensburg was the second most important harbour in Denmark after Copenhagen. Its connection to the Danish West Indies pioneered trade routes that brought rum to the region. Flensburg is now in Germany and was a rum capital known for its Jamaican imported high-ester rum blended with local spirit. From 1672 to 1917, the Caribbean islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix were a Danish colony. That period was defined by sugarcane production and rum distilling in the Caribbean. The Danish navy played a crucial role during this time, actively transporting and trading rum, but also as a ration for its sailors. While the Danes acknowledge this historical link to these islands, they view the rum of the U.S. Virgin Islands as distinctly Caribbean. Nevertheless, this historical connection significantly positioned Denmark within the global rum trade. This legacy has ultimately contributed to the vibrant landscape of craft distilleries and independent bottlers that define Denmark’s rum scene today. Denmark is an incredible European road trip destination involving a series of island-hopping and picturesque coastal villages, studded with hidden gem rum experiences. We take you away from the beautiful Tivoli Gardens and start a new adventure from the north of Denmark, that winds south and east back to the capital to discover the heart of Danish rum, or rom as they call it.
North Jutland
The northern coast of Denmark borders the Skagerrak, the North Sea, the Kattegat, and the Limfjord, a channel used since Viking times. This rugged coastline with stunning beaches and shifting dunes has a wild feel, and the coastal towns are a favourite holiday spot for Danes.
Skotlander Rom
Founded in 2013 by Titte and Anders Skotlander in Pandrup, on the West Coast of Denmark, near Løkken, one of Denmark’s top holiday destinations. Skotlander Rom is dedicated to producing small batches of high-quality rum, gin, and liqueurs. Ten years ago, they began making their signature Skotlander White Rum, an unaged spirit known for its slow fermentation process (up to 4 weeks). Skotlander Rom is their core Danish rum brand. They also create limited-edition rums ageing at sea off the Danish coast. Their West Coast Hustlers Rum is fermented and distilled from sugar cane syrup and double aged, first in new oak barrels and then in old Stauning Whiskey Rye barrels. Skotlander Bunker Rum is another line, distilled in 2016 and aged in ex-PX Sherry and ex-Oloroso barrels in a cold World War II bunker in West Jutland. Skotlander Rom also presents Great Dane Rum, a brand featuring rums sourced from overseas and secondarily aged in Denmark. The Great Dane Rum Organic is distilled in Paraguay from organic sugar cane molasses and aged in ex-bourbon barrels before a secondary maturation in new American oak in Denmark. The Great Dane Rum Cask Strength (59.7%) is a blend of rums from Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Jamaica, and Panama, initially aged for 3-8 years in ex-bourbon barrels in the tropics and then finished in old Skotlander rum barrels in Denmark. Finally, the Great Dane 15-Year-Old Rum is a molasses rum distilled in Spain and Venezuela, then aged 15 years in ex-bourbon barrels. You can visit them to explore Skotlander Rom at their Showroom, tasting room, and shop. There is a guided tour of production, and they regularly host rum tastings, other events, and a rum club with special bottlings.

Nordisk Brænderi
Located in Fjerritslev, in the northern part of Denmark near the west coast, Nordisk Brænderi was founded in 2009 by Anders Bilgram and is a family-run craft distillery near the ice age glacier of Hødalen. Their Wanderum Llareno Edition is a blend of Colombian cane juice rum and Danish molasses rum. The Colombian cane juice rum originates from a small sugar cane farm where local farmers harvest cane on steep slopes, transport it by animals or old trucks, press the juice on-site, ferment it, and distill it according to Nordisk Brænderi’s recipe at a local Colombian distillery. This juice rum is then shipped to Denmark to Nordisk Brænderi, where they also ferment and distill molasses rum. Both rums are aged in oak barrels at the distillery and finished with local sugar cane syrup for softness. The Wanderum Llareno Edition (42%) has aromas from Colombian sugar cane, followed by a taste of oak, ex-sherry barrel ageing, and molasses rum with a touch of sweetness. Guided tours are available by appointment, including a welcome drink and tastings of various spirits, including rum.

Fanø Spirits
On the small island of Fanø, along the West Jutland Wadden Sea coast, and opposite Esbjerg, lies Fanø Spirits. Renowned for its vast tidal landscapes and rich wildlife, the Wadden Sea is one of the world’s largest tidal areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island is known for its raw nature and rich wildlife. Founded in 2015 by Lars Jensen Schou, the distillery draws deep inspiration from the island’s maritime and naval heritage, as well as its diverse natural flavours. This unique combination led to the creation of Fanø Skibsrom®. Made from sugar-cane molasses spirit distilled in Jamaica, it’s then seasoned and aged on Fanø. Fanø Skibsrom® combines the taste of the Wadden Sea with the exotic Caribbean. Lars’ three children have been part of Fanø Spirits since 2019. The profile of Fanø Skibsrom® comes from a two-step process of spicing and ageing. First, spicing with natural spices and heather honey, sea buckthorn and Madagascar vanilla. Then, it’s aged in oak barrels, which previously contained port. Fanø Skibsrom® has won awards at the IWSC. Fanø Skibsrom® has 5 variants to explore: The Merman: robust & spicy, The Siren: sweet & aromatic, The Seahorse: extra sweet, The Captain is cask strength, and Gunpowder 57 is cask strength. Norlyk Distillery
Founded in 2020, Norlyk Distillery has just moved in May 2025 to Den Røde Plads in Tønder. The micro-distillery established by cousins Claus Norlyk and Jesper Norlyk produces gin and rum. They focus on natural ingredients and small-batch production. Norlyk Rum is made from cane sugar and gains flavour and colour from Danish oak, not through traditional barrel ageing but by adding specially made oak directly to the rum, creating a blend of Mauritian sweetness and Southern Jutland floral notes with a clean, soft profile. The Bog Oak Room is aged with 3,100-year-old bog oak, resulting in a softer, rounder experience and is sweetened. The Speciel Edition Rum has a deeper flavour due to extra-heated oak. Norlyk GunPowder Rum is a high-proof (54.6%) rum aged in Danish oak previously used for port wine, giving it a fruity, soft note and is sweetened. The distillery offers tours by appointment.

Fary Lochan Destilleri
Located in Give, near Farres forest in South Jutland, Denmark, Fary Lochan Destilleri was founded in 2009 by Jens-Erik Jørgensen, primarily focusing on whisky production using nettle-smoked malt. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, co-owner Morten experimented with rum distilling using molasses acquired in 2016. This marked their first venture into rum, involving research and consultation with Anders Bilgram from Nordisk Brænderi and Anders Skotlander. The molasses was diluted and fermented for an extended 2 months using a special rum yeast, a long fermentation period that contributed to a high ester content, estimated around 1000 gr./HlAA with a notable Butanoic acid ester. The rum was made from 175kg of molasses and 825 litres of water, then triple-distilled using their Scottish Forsyth copper pot stills: once in the large wash kettle for 17 hours and twice in the smaller spirit still for 16 and 8 hours, yielding approximately 100 litres of pure rum. This spirit was then aged for 4 years and 8 months in two small (50L) PX sherry casks from JL Rodriguez (second fill after holding unsmoked Fary Lochan whisky for 1.5 years). Bottled at cask strength (58.62%) in February 2025, the release yielded 109 bottles, experiencing a 23.5% angel share of continentally-aged rum bottled for Rom De Luxe. Fary Lochan has a guided tour for their whisky and gin production, the rum is a special side project.

A Clean Spirit – Skunk Rum
Founded in Odense in 2020 by Bintu Singh, produces the distinctive Skunk Rum series. In 2022, Skunk Rum began in Paraguay with the harvesting and processing of organic sugar cane into sugar. The molasses is then shipped to Nyborg, Denmark, for the production of a Jamaican-inspired rum, rich in esters and flavour, achieved through long fermentation for around 3 weeks with varied yeasts. Distilled on a hybrid still, they create four Skunk Rum varieties: Original (with different yeast each time), Spotted (wine yeast), Striped (special mint yeast), and Hooded (virgin American oak-aged Spotted). Skunk Rum production has now moved to Paraguay in partnership with the organic and fair trade Legado distillery, where future Skunk Rum production will take place. A Clean Spirit also has the Ron Sostenible range from local Dominican Republic sugarcane, including Ron Sostenible Blanco (column distilled, 12 months in Bourbon casks, sail-shipped) and aged expressions like the 8YO Experimental Cask series (Tokaji, Rioja, Oloroso, Triple Cask), 12YO Cognac Cask, 15YO La Isabela, and 16YO La Isabela. Some old Skunk Rum barrels will be used for a new Ron Sostenible release. Their rum is available across Denmark, and Skunk Rum will feature at their stand during Whiskymessen in Copenhagen and Kolding, as well as at the BorderShop Puttgarden Festival in Spring or Fall.
