Rum Guide to Martinique

Martinique, named “Island of Flowers,” the lush botanical landscape is created by the volcanic-rich soil. The devastating 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée reshaped not only the island’s landscape but also its rum industry. However, rum-making has thrived here since French colonial times, with roots tracing back to 1640. Martinique is the spiritual home of Rhum Agricole with AOC Martinique (since 1995), a dedication to agriculture and fresh cane juice rum. Since the 1950s, large-scale production has used Creole column stills to make Rhum Agricole and one distillery makes a high-ester “Grand Arôme” variety. The French influence extends to every aspect including ageing in French oak barrels and adopting Cognac terms. Like Guadeloupe, the local serves are Ti’ Punch & Punch Planteur. Beach hopping and rum distillery visits go hand-in-hand here.
