Barbados is the Birthplace of Rum, with distilling records going back to 1703. This non-volcanic outlier island is formed on limestone and coral reefs and sits closest to Africa for historical trade routes. This made it a hub for the slave trade, and rum was first made by colonists and African slaves. Barbadian rum uses molasses but has more recently reintroduced sugarcane. Distilled on a combination of column and pot stills, some producers blend the spirit before and after maturation, creating its distinctive character. The island’s rum scene is growing as new distilleries come onboard. Barbados is on every rum lovers bucket list
