Rum Guide to Mexico

Mexico, land of the Aztecs has dramatic landscapes of volcanoes, mountains, deep canyons, lush rainforests, and arid deserts produce sugar to make rum. The Spanish introduced sugarcane in the 1500s, and thrived in the Yucatán’s 19th-century haciendas, leaving a legacy of rum production. Veracruz is a top sugarcane-growing region with high-quality rums. Unique expressions abound, from Charanda, a rum-like spirit with a Denomination of Origin in Michoacán, to Oaxacan rums crafted at high altitude using traditional Mezcal methods. Mexico is a rising star in artisanal rum.
