Europe > Sweden

Sweden, the “Elongated Country” is known for its cool Nordic climate and stunning landscapes. While not a tropical paradise, Sweden has a rum connection. The earliest evidence comes from a shipwreck in 1628, a tin bottle containing rum was discovered amongst the treasures on the sunken Swedish warship Vasa. In 1733, Swedish sailors returning from Java on a voyage to the Dutch East Indies brought back a unique spirit called Batavia Arrack (a rum-like spirit). This sparked a craze for Swedish Punsch, a spiced punch made with Batavia Arrack, sugar, and acidic wines. This took Sweden by storm, becoming a staple beverage for centuries. While large-scale rum production didn’t take off in Sweden, the spirit never truly left the public consciousness. The recent years a couple of craft rum distilleries has emerged distilling molasses on small stills.
