Rum Guide to The Netherlands

The Netherlands, The Land of Windmills for its iconic water management structures and canals, has a rich maritime history that surprisingly intertwines with rum. Dutch seafaring prowess and expertise in trade played a crucial role in shaping the global rum landscape. As early as the 1400s, the Dutch controlled Indonesia and traded Batavia Arrack, a type of rum, back to Europe. Meanwhile, Dutch Brazil facilitated rum trade to the Caribbean, solidifying Dutch connections to the spirit. Today, the Netherlands remains the world’s largest supplier of bulk rum, and has seen the rise of a vibrant craft rum distillers in the Netherlands.
