Rum Guide to Germany

Germany is a land of flat plains in the north to winelands on the River Rhine, Bavarian Alps in the south, and picturesque castles. The port city of Flensburg, near Hamburg, was a rum hub since the 1700s. This is where “Rum Verschnitt” originated, a blending technique where local spirits were “topped up” with high-ester Jamaican rum for extra flavour. Germany’s long distilling tradition with over 27,000 small distilleries today. While most focus on other spirits, a few are rum distillers making molasses rum, and ageing German wine casks, tapping into the country’s rich winemaking heritage. A new rum capital of Germany rum is emerging in in the south.
