Bulgaria, in south-eastern Europe, is known as the “Land of Roses” for its fragrant valleys. Bulgaria’s diverse geography, with moderate climate and mountainous landscapes is better known for “rakiya”, the brandy-like liquor, typical of the Balkan countries. This distilling heritage goes back to the 14th century. But Bulgaria does make and bottle rum, distilling molasses, and ageing in oak barrels.
