Belgium, the crossroads of Europe and the “Flat Country” has an interesting rum story. While Belgium itself has no sugarcane production, its colonial past in Africa played a key role. In the 19th century saw the rise of the Flemish sugar beet industry, which ironically contributed to the decline of Caribbean sugar trade. However, the story takes a turn in 1925 when Belgians in the African DR Congo started sugar refining. This led to rum imports into Belgium, and eventually, to domestic rum distillation. Fast forward to the 2010s, and Belgium’s rum scene began to truly flourish. Several blenders, bottlers and a number artisanal rum distillers have emerged in recent times.
