Austria comes from the word Austar, which means eastern. Amidst the peaks of the Alps, Austria is landlocked in the is heart of Europe. Austria has unique rum legacy. In 1832, Sebastian Stroh founded a distillery that produced the world’s first spiced rum. This “Inländer Rum” holds a protected designation within the European Union, a testament to its special character. Back in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, rum was even a daily ration for sailors. Today, Austrian rum production continues, with distilleries crafting rich and smooth expressions aged in oak barrels. Rum adds another layer to Austria’s fascinating culture.
