Vietnam, the Land of the Ascending Dragon, has rice-terraced mountains, lush tropical jungles, beaches, and the fertile Mekong Delta. Sugarcane cultivation has a long history, particularly in the Delta. French colonial influence in the 19th century further connected Vietnam to rum, placing it at the same latitude as the French Caribbean rum-producing islands. In 2016, Ho Chi Minh City saw the rise of its first cane juice rum, distilled in copper columns and aged in French oak casks. The trend continued in 2018 with another distillery opening in the coastal city of Hoi An, specialising in overproof rum made with local yellow sugarcane.
