Tonga, the “Friendly Islands,” is a 176-island volcanic archipelago known for its fertile, flat lands and pleasant tropical climate. British colonial influence played a role in sugarcane introduction by Captain James Cook’s crew in 1777. The industry thrived in the late 19th century but eventually shifted towards imported sugar. However, rum production found a foothold in 1997 when the first distillery opened in the capital, Nuku’alofa, using locally-sourced sugarcane molasses.
