Tahiti, The Islands of Paradise, is a volcanic archipelago in French Polynesia and tropical climate. The region surprisingly claims one of the world’s oldest rum-making traditions. Sugarcane arrived in 1768, with a unique “Creole” hybrid cane emerging in 1790, likely influenced by French overseas distilling practices. Modern rum production began in 1983 with a distillery on Moorea, followed by another on the main island in 1992. These islands significantly influenced the global Tiki rum cocktail culture. A recent innovation arrived in 2015 – the first pure cane juice rum, sourced from sugarcane grown across hundreds of miles on three separate islands.
