Sri Lanka, “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” is a pear-shaped island with tropical climate and wide range of landscapes, from lush hills to pristine beaches. Sugarcane cultivation has thrived on this limestone-rich island since the 19th century. While rum isn’t traditional, a long history of distillation exists. The oldest distillery, founded in 1924 under British rule, produces arrack, a spirit made from palm sap. However, Sri Lanka is embracing rum. In 2019, a new distillery launched, crafting rum using fermented sugarcane juice, cane honey, and molasses.
