Singapore, the “Lion City,” is a small island nation situated on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, just north of the equator. Despite its hot and humid tropical climate, Singapore has never been a major sugarcane grower. Instead, it has flourished as a trading hub since British colonial times in the 19th century. This focus on trade continued, and in 2015, rum distilling began using imported molasses from Malaysia. The country’s first rum festival in 2023 reflects a growing interest in rum within it’s top cocktail bar scene.
