New Caledonia, “The Isle of Pines,” has a tropical climate with stunning natural features, including the world’s longest continuous barrier reef. This French territory, comprised of four main islands, has a fascinating rum story. Sugarcane arrived in 1853 with the French, and settlers from Réunion established sugar production that peaked in the early 20th century. However, rum took off in 2016 with the opening of the first distillery in the South Province. Here, they craft unique Rhum Agricole using local red sugarcane varieties and fresh cane juice.
