The Indian Subcontinent has the Thar Desert, jungles, the Ganges Plain, the tropical south and the cool heights of the Himalayas. Despite being the world’s second largest sugar producer, rum wasn’t always king. Historically, India even exported Bengal rum to Australia. An 1855-established distillery is now home to one of India’s most iconic rum brands launched in 1954, reflecting this legacy. Today, a new wave of craft distillers in Mumbai and Goa is pioneering authentic rums using local molasses, jaggery, fresh sugarcane juice, and Indian spices.
