Malawi, “The Warm Heart of Africa” has a warm climate along the valley of the Shire River with mountains to Lake Malawi. Rum has a long, if unconventional, history. During British rule, sugarcane cultivation began, with local Mlolo varieties taking root. While moonshine, sometimes made from sugarcane, was traditionally distilled by women in townships, legal rum production started in 1965 with the country’s main producer continuing the legacy.
