DR Congo, the “Heart of Africa,” DR Congo has a vast rainforest and a hot, humid climate. Rum production is relatively new. While the first and only sugar mill opened in 1925, it wasn’t until after independence from Belgium in 1960 that rum distilling began. The Kwilu-Ngongo region uses the local M’Boma sugarcane variety to create molasses rum, showcasing the country’s emerging rum scene.
