Venezuela’s rum heritage is as diverse as its landscape – from the thundering Angel Falls gracing the powerful mountains to lush jungles, sprawling river plains, and arid coasts. Sugarcane thrives in the rich alluvial soils of Yaracuy, Lara, and Trujillo, where European settlers established rum production in 1796. The cooler nights here are a rum-maker’s secret weapon, minimizing cask evaporation and the “angel’s share” that contributes to the final flavour. Venezuelan rums, influenced by Cuba, use molasses and sometimes cane honey. Distilleries employ both linear and Solera aging methods in oak barrels, overseen by revered “Maestros Roneros” (rum masters) who have elevated Venezuelan rum’s reputation worldwide.
