While Brazil’s heart beats with the rhythm of Caipirinhas, a surprising rum scene is quietly emerging. Sugarcane, a cornerstone of the landscape from the Amazon’s fringes to southern vineyards, has a rich history intertwined with rum. Considered the birthplace of rum in the Americas, Portuguese colonists established sugar mills in the 1500s, bringing distillation techniques. While the Dutch steered rum production north into the Caribbean, Brazil embraced Cachaça, a sugarcane spirit with its own unique identity. Today, a few Cachaça producers are rediscovering rum’s roots, crafting aged expressions from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, adding a new chapter to Brazil’s rum story.
