Aruba, a Dutch gem in the southern Lesser Antilles, boasts a surprisingly recent rum scene. Unlike its Venezuelan neighbour, sugarcane cultivation isn’t part of Aruba’s arid landscape. However, rum production has flourished on a small scale since the mid-20th century. Local distilleries import molasses, which is then column-distilled and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The rum making is influenced of nearby Venezuela, offering a unique taste on the “one happy island.”
