Hungary, nicknamed “Pearl of Danube” for its location this famous European river. Known for its moderate climate and vast plains, and it famous Tokaj wine region. In the 19th century, the Austro-Hungarian Navy, which included Hungary at the time, included rum as part of their daily rations. Today, Budapest, Hungary’s capital city, is home to a vibrant rum scene. A distillery founded in 2001 has shifted its focus to producing rum. They ferment South American molasses, and distill before ageing the rum in brand new barrels, and finally finishing in Tokaj wine barrels. So, next time you explore Budapest, be sure to raise a glass of Hungarian rum.
