Rum Guide to France

Hexagonal France, a land of diverse landscapes – from the soaring French Alps, rugged Central Massif to Provencal Mediterranean coasts and rolling wine lands. While rum production primarily thrives in French overseas territories, in the 1600s, French distillers carried their expertise from Cognac to the Caribbean, influencing rum-making techniques. Cities like Bordeaux and Marseille were key ports for colonial trade, became centres for rum blending and bottling in the late 1800s. Fast forward to the 2010s, and a new wave of craft rum distilleries has emerged within metropolitan France. Distributors and even Cognac houses are ageing their rums in prized French oak casks. 2022 saw the first cane juice rum made in France and organic rum from craft distillers are redefining what French rum can be.
