Czechia, nicknamed “The Heart of Europe,” has a rolling landscape dotted with charming castles and a surprisingly vibrant rum scene. This landlocked country, known for its moderate climate, has a rich brewing and distilling heritage dating back to 1518. By 1863, another distillery was established, supplying rum also to the Navy and Imperial Court. During the Napoleonic Wars, with rum import restrictions a unique Czech spirit emerged: Tuzemský rum. This spirit, distilled from sugar beet, became a local favorite. While EU regulations now prevent it from being called “rum” since 2003, its legacy lives on. In 2016, Cuba offered to settle a Cold War-era debt to Czechia – in rum! There’s a growing number of rum festivals and bars making the country a top European rum destination.
