Taiwan, the Heart of Asia, has 1000 lakes, mountains, forests, and a subtropical climate. Sugarcane has a deep history here, dating back to Chinese settlers in 1632. The Dutch and Japanese later played a role in developing a thriving sugar industry that peaked in the 20th century, occupying nearly a fifth of the island’s farmland. Visitors can explore this legacy at the Suantou Sugar Refinery and Ten Drum cultural complex. While sugar production has declined, rum is making a comeback. In 2017, a distillery emerged in Nantou County, drawing inspiration from French techniques to craft artisanal rum, leading a revival in the spirit.
