Indonesia, “The Emerald Archipelago,” a vast island nation known for its volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, and stunning beaches, and long history of sugarcane cultivation dating back millennia. By the 1500s, the Dutch were actively trading “Batavia Arrack,” a unique spirit made with molasses, fermented red rice, and locally-grown Javanese sugarcane, distilled on traditional Chinese stills. This spirit reached Europe and America in the 1850s. While Arrack remains a national popular, a recent shift to craft rum has emerged on Bali, experimenting and creating exciting new expressions of Indonesian rum.
