Mozambique, the “Land of the Makonde,” Mozambique in southern Africa has a warm tropical climate and stunning coastline. Sugarcane’s history here is intertwined with Portuguese colonisation. In the early 1500s, plantations sprouted along the Zambesi River, and by the early 1900s, Sena Sugar Estates became one of Africa’s largest producers. A local sugarcane variety, Inhambane, contributes to the country’s rum production, and rum and raspberry is even the official local drink, reflecting the unique spirit of Mozambique.
