Rum Guide to Mauritius

Mauritius, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a volcanic island with a tropical climate and dramatic landscapes. Sugarcane arrived in 1638 with the Dutch, leading to the first sugar mill in 1740 and the oldest distillery in 1819. The island’s fertile volcanic soil nourishes a unique blend of 12 sugarcane varieties, with yellow and red canes favoured for rum production. A 2006 shift in legislation lifted a ban on using sugarcane juice, allowing for a wider range of rum styles. Mauritian rum uses copper pot stills for single or double distillation and is increasingly embracing long ageing in French oak casks.
