Madagascar, “The Red Island” name for its soil has rainforests, the Baobab Tree, beaches, and mountains. While vanilla may be its claim to fame, sugarcane thrives in the rich red soil, covering 90% of agricultural land. Rum production has two faces. Traditional Malagasy moonshine utilizes local sugarcane, while commercially produced Dzama rum, established in 1929 on Nosy-be Island, has become a national favourite, moving to the mainland in 1984.
