Réunion is called The Intense Island for its very active volcanoes. This French department has a tropical climate and fertile volcanic soil perfect for sugarcane; grown here since the island’s discovery. Rum production has a rich history, with the first recorded still dating back to 1704. Today, Réunion is the top rum producer among French territories, even surpassing the Caribbean islands. Distinct styles: Rhum Arrangé, a rum liqueur macerating local fruits, unaged Rhum Agricole, produced with techniques akin to Cognac. An 1886-established distillery is the oldest, and Rhum de la Réunion is the regulation AOC designation.
