Ghana, the “Gateway to Africa,” has a warm tropical climate, plains, rolling hills, and the world’s largest manmade lake. Rum’s history is intertwined with its colonial past. In the 1500s, European traders used rum on the Gold Coast to barter for enslaved people. Ghanaians were taken to the Caribbean and made rum there. Today, rum production thrives. The state-owned distillery, founded in 1958, remains the largest producer, using locally-grown Akwapim Red sugarcane. Meanwhile, a new wave of craft rum makers, some with Ghanaian roots are joining the scene.
